Primary purpose of Scarlet Letter

  • What is the central/primary purpose of the story? Is the purpose important or meaningful?

  1. People shouldn't go around judging people. I think Hawthorn was trying to teach the lesson of "Judge not lest ye be judged" and telling them God will judge them in the end, you don't need to do Gods work for him. It also has the power of yourself, how much a human soul can handle under so much stress to make you stronger inside.

    1. Yes and I feel the theme of not judging can transcend time and bring meaning to our mondern lives. we all need to step back and really mind our own business.

  2. The Scarlet Letter shows the difference between shaming someone in public and allowing them to suffer the consequences. Adultery is a sin in the Bible and Hester committed adultery with Dimmesdale. In these times, this issue is big, but now a days it happens all the time and some approve and some do not. The author, Hawthorne shows a woman who is experiencing guilt and emotional destruction because of the affair. This destruction of her inner self is enough punishment for the crime. The Scarlet Letter is also shows a love story between Hester and the Dimmesdale. With plans to run away with each, Dimmesdale and Hester show that their love has surpassed distance and time away from each other. This love explains Hester’s actions because she would not reveal the identity of her lover. The scarlet letter is symbolic in a number of ways. A woman charged with adultery and forced to wear the letter A upon her clothes. Hester decided to add fancy embroidery to the letter as to show a little pride. Hester made peace with the crime, publicly confesses, and endures the suffering the community imposes. “The Scarlet Letter” is the sad story of a woman’s shame and unkind treatment. Hester had to suffer at the hands of a Puritan’s society in which she lived. Hester learned to forgive herself for her adultery, but society continues to ridicule her for it. Pearl, her daughter is a reminder of the wild choices in her past, but as Pearl grows up, Hester continued to live in the present rather than in the past. Hester had strength to carry on the best way she could.
