Some readers believe that the elaborate decoration that Hester embroiders on the scarlet letter indicates her rejection of the community’s view of her act.Do you agree or disagree?Explain
I agree. She thinks that the act that they did together was a form of sacred union of it's own. She truly believes in the power of love that is spoken in the Bible was expresed in their expirence. The fact that they had Pearl was proof, they created a child which they could love and other may one day accept.
The scarlet letter was emotional torture for Hester, but by her decorating, it gave her a sense of comfort of some sort. In a way, she was rejecting the community’s view, but the letter was a part of her life now and symbolizes who she is. She was expected from the community to wear the scarlet letter and follow the Puritan way of life. In decorating the letter, it represented something beautiful in her life, the strength to overcome. Once she decorated the letter, it diminished her pain to be tolerable. Besides the strength she gained, the memory of who she loved, Pearl and Dimmesdale, brought the comfort she needed in the decoration of the letter and not to be controlled by shame.
