The title

Let's discuss the importance of the Title--and what it meant when published and what the phrase "scarlet letter" has come to mean today.

  1. It was a symbol of shame and then became a symbol of defience. When this book was published it was a symbol of the old past that they tried to hide.

    1. I really don't think I could of said it better. It was meant to shame but it didn't hold her to shame for she is overcoming it.

  2. When I started reading the book I identified the title as the scarlet letter is meant to be shame, but then the letter changes it meaning. It is an identity that Hester perceives with herself. The A , I think is meant to be adultery in the beginning, but in the end it is able. This letter is the main focus of the book and has become a status of Hester and serves as a reminder of her affair and what the townspeople think of her. It is a symbol and I feel it brought out the strength in Hester.
