I think that it is helpful for them both. They get to see different worlds and learn from them. I hope they stay close through the book, they help each other in so many ways.
The path that Antonia takes with her father home, hand in hand, while Jim goes to his home shows the distinct separation of the families' cultural norms, socio-economic status, and familial relationships. Antonia and her father share a moment of warmth and love thinking of "the old country" while Jim can only look on. The Shimerdas walk hand in hand to their "cave" with him carrying rabbits he will eventually make into hats for his Antonia for the winter. Jim does not have a relationship like that with anyone in his life anylonger and travels alone to his home with his grandparents.
I love your answer Angela, you have put together some nice language in your sentences and made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Ántonia and Jim encounter two different worlds as they take different paths. Mr. Shimerda, who has recently caught three rabbits, is a reminder of the life they live and the use of the rabbits is enough for them to be happy. The rabbits not only provide food for them or warmth from the hats but a closeness or bond they share of mutual understanding and serenity about them. I feel as though Jim had a reflection of the different lives to be had or what they were currently living, and how one can be happy despite the pitfalls.
