Jim says of the immigrant girls who work in Black Hawk, “If there were no girls like
them in the world, then there would be no poetry.” Explain his statement.

  2. Poetry means many of lives adventures either sad or happy and I feel that is what Jim feels about these girls. Remembering the past is important for understanding the present and future. The values of earlier times are worth remembering and preserving. Jim has affections for the hired girls and he is a romantic. Jim is withdrawn from society and finds glamour and glory in the immigrant girls. The immigrant girls represent a carefree charm and free spirit. Jim looks at these girls and sees overcoming language barriers and determining their own wealth. These girls have strength of character acquired through hardship. Jim sees the struggles and triumphs of life in the immigrant girls and poetry is their life in words.

  3. Jim is comparing the "working girls'" lives to those one reads in poetry: full of struggle, strife, deep emotion, anguish, happiness, and perseverance. These girls are what stories are made of, they have overcome obstacles, they have walked in shame only to rise again for themselves and their families. They are what makes life interesting, challenging, and amazing, just like poetry is to an avid reader, something unique, different, and beautiful.

  4. I feel that Jim was expressing that these women, like poetry, are underappriciated. People see them, or read them, and admire there looks and there sounds but they don't realy study them and take time to get to understand them. I think that is what that line means.
