  1. 7. How does the union disappoint the family?

The union was seen as a way to protect the workers, or so that's what they thought when they first joined the union, to fight for their rights and such. They were some what improved by the expirence, they did learn english and get involved with the democratic process. Yet, at the same time the unions were corropte and didn't do anything to change their possition in life. As my Dad put it "Union's are great, when they work."

  2. 1. Who has taken an interest in one another? Why is this important to the family?
In this chapter, Marija and Tamoszuis began to get interested in each other and they start to work out a relationship. Tamoszuis realizes that Marija is a very attractive woman and likes the way she is. Tamoszius earns a lot of money by playing the violin in the community, and he aids the family economically. This is very important because the family now receives money from an extra member and can benefit from it.

    2. How does Marija handle her money? Is this a positive or negative characteristic?
Marija is the highest earner of the whole family and she saves the money she earns. She uses her money for things for the family. This is a positive trait because she prefers to save money instead of spending it on unnecessary things even though she could. She is not selfish and buys items for the family, which is positive. Marija works at the canning factory and her job is to paint the cans. When Marija is told that the canning factory is closed because lack of demand, she is now back in the being unemployed.

  3. 5. Describe “broken time.”
Companies made rules and regulations to their own benefit, not caring or taking into consideration the workers interests and complaints. Unfairness was the main complaint from the workers to the factory owners, and it continued to be for a long time because owners were stubborn and selfish. Broken time was the work-time you as a worker completed, but are not paid for. For example, you are assigned 3 labor hours and complete 2 hours with 55 minutes, the owner of the factory would only pay you for 2 hours and not caring for the rest of the 55 minutes, which was another hour of service.

    6. Why was Jurgis more willing to join a union when he was approached a second time?
Jurgis accepted to join a union when he was approached for the second time because now he knew what it was like to be treated unfairly and he was disappointed on the reality of things and realized he had to do something about it. Jurgis worked hard and his effort was not paid off the way he wanted to. Jurgis had much to say and a lot going through his mind. These ideas needed to be heard by someone, and that someone was the union.
