What was the purpose of unions in America? How has this purpose evolved? What unions have been in the news recently?

  1. Unions started off to help protect the workers and make sure they get a fair say in their work load and pay with the employers. The purpose evolved into strength in how the business treats the workers with their right to work, their pay and benefits, raises, etc. Recently in the news you see a lot of people being locked out and not getting to work because the Unions and the business can't come to an agreement.

  2. Labor unions are organized groups of workers from the same or related fields who have joined to present a collective voice in matters of negotiation. These groups need to pay dues usually every time they get paid to belong. They elect leaders and have been in the American workplace for many years. By being in a group, they provide an overall powerful voice of many instead of one individual. The workers use things such as strikes and boycotting to put on pressure to the management to have their requests met. I currently belong to a union and I am a union representative. My husband belonged to a union and was involved with picketing. I do know that my husband union has been in the news because of Frigidaire and their lawsuit.

    1. Beth: you protested UNIONS or you protested the government trying to disband the unions. I'm lost.
