  1. He is really ill and he is very careing about his family. He is very fond of Antonia because she is so energtic and careing, like himself and how he once was.

  2. Antonia's father is thankful for the kindness of Mrs. Burden and is hopeful his daughter he adores, Antonia, will be taught English by Mrs. Burden. Mr. Shimerda treats Antonia special and is particular about her learning English, he is trying to secure her future in that capacity as well.

    1. WHY do you think the father is so partial to Antonia?? What qualities does she have that particularly appeal to him?? Do he have the same qualities or does he WISH he had the same qualities??

  4. Mr. Shimerda is a kind man who loves his family and even left his country to help benefit his children in the future. I feel that he looks to Antonia as a hope to bridging the gap between the two cultures they are living in. He even made is clear to Jimmiy that he wanted him to teach Antonia english.

  5. Mr. Shimerda was the rock of his family and respected. He tried hard to adapt to life in America, but found it difficult. He is heartbroken and heartsick with his new life in America. He cannot adjust to the hard life on the farm. There is sadness and exhaustion in Mr. Shimerda's face. Mr. Shimerda feels alone in the world. He has great love for his daughter, Antonia. Although he is content and happy in the Burdens' kitchen during Christmas he shoots himself because he cannot be happy in his new world.

  6. Antonia is a very lively and intelligent women who can have the world by the tail. I believe her father believed in her and wanted all the success for her and a desired respect because she went after what she wanted.
