antonia 16

When Jim sees Ántonia for the first time after so many years, he describes her as
“battered but not diminished.” What does he mean? How does her appearance reflect
her character and her life?

  1. He had not seen Antonia for 20 years fearing that she was changed, fearing to see what she turned out to be. Upon seeing her he noticed that she had aged, recognized her harsh life, and her appearance showed it. Her character, her personality, her charisma however had not diminished, it had not aged, it was still as young and beautiful as she had once been.

  2. Antonia might have been damaged or worn, but not cheapened or reduced. Antonia still was energized by life. Ántonia has been changed by hard times, she has kept her youthful vitality because she has kept growing and changing, just like the land. Instead of draining her energies, her children seem to feed it, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

  3. Life had hit her hard but she still bore the burning fires of life he experenced with her as a child. She still loved life, she had an unkillable love for her family and she continues to move forward because that is all she knows. she will go on with her life as she had in the past, she will keep those fires burning because she holds onto a rare personality.

  4. She's seen and been through so much, that he notices it has taken the toll on her as what you would see with age. However, he notices that she has still got the desire of life, that spark in her eyes. She still is a young girl at heart.
