How would you describe the friendship between Jim and Ántonia? In what ways do they
benefit each other?

  1. They are both young kids thrown into a new world with strangers all around and no one really understands them. They help each other with the direcion and companionship of one another so they don't feel so alone and have some strength from one another.

  2. I agree with Terri that indeed you have two people that are in entirely different surroundings than what they are used to so they confide in and bring comfort to one another. Jim learns from Antonia what it is like to have immigrated to America and rely on others entirely for safe passage and security. Jim provides Antonia with endless learning opportunities to learn the English language and the way of life of Americans.

  3. They have a childish innocence about them and their relationship. with being young and in a new area of the world they bond on a different level. and i also agree with Terri.

  4. Jim has been Ántonia’s guide to the prairie and American life. Jim was the person that first taught Antonia the English language. She admired Jim's knowledge and talents. Antonia held a affection for Jim as brotherly love. Antonia had respect for Jim even though he wanted more. Antonia and Jim thought of each other daily throughout their lives. Antonia had a strong bond with the land and Jim was opposite. Antonia listened to her heart while Jim’s decisions were made according to social status of right or wrong.
