  1. 2. Why did Jurgis’s and Ona’s family decide to go to America?

They decide to go to America because they have nothing left in the old country. The family of Ona has lost everything at court after her father dies and her brother has a friend in America talking about how rich he has become since he has come to America. Jurgis thinks it's a good idea, since he thinks that all he has to do is work hard and he has it made.

    2. Why did Jurgis’s and Ona’s family decide to go to America?
    3. How do they first encounter dishonesty?

Jurgis appears to be an ambitious, honest, hardworking individual with specific goals and desires for himself and his family. He is confident, perhaps too much, in his abilities to showcase his skill and workmanship and adores Ona like one would care for a small child.

The families go to America for a chance to earn better wages, for employment opportunity they were unable to find in Lithuania and for the union of Ona and Jurgis in marriage. The families were under the false assumption that the wages were greater and cost of living the same as found in Lithuania.

They are lured out of their money by the police and agents who were able to take full advantage of their vulnerability in a new country. This happens to them twice and eventually they choose to avoid the police or offers of assistance from others.

He seems to be motivated and determined. He has been brought to a new world and wants to succeed. His determination gets him through the chances against him.
    2. Why did Jurgis’s and Ona’s family decide to go to America?
They wanted to escape the poor and corrupt society in which they were living. When Ona’s father dies they realized one of their friends traveled to America and became rich so this is their desire too. The belief that America is a safe place and a place of opportunity the adventure began.

  4. 6. Describe the neighborhoods of Packingtown.
The neighborhoods were ugly, disgusting, filthy, and deteriorated. The neighborhood of Packingtown was a garbage dump and a place where the poor people lived. The neighborhood had a constant bad smell, smoky sky and buildings that were not kept in code. The people living in the building surpassed the normal living arrangements concerning capacity per room. The social class of this area was considered dirty, poor and uneducated.
