  1. 3. What is the hog-squeal of the universe?

I see this as a metaphor of the plit of the laborer. They have done no wrong to the business, yet they are the ones that suffer for the profit of the busness and see no kindness from the system.

I find this the most interesting of the questions for this chapter. What do you think?

    2. Sorry--the hog squeal sentence is on 29. That whole sentence is AWESOME--what do those hogs symbolize (more than just the laborers, I think--perhaps bigger????)

  3. 1. What are Jurgis’s expectations for his new job?
Jurgis was positive and energetic about his job. He was standing for around 30 minutes and was granted a job almost instantly when they saw him. Jurgis had self-satisfaction because he set out to obtain a job and he got one. I believe because of his physical traits is what landed him his job at Browns because he seemed physically fit to do some very hard work. He felt I think that this job was the idea of America and was very pleased. He felt comfortable in carrying out any job that was asked of him.

    1. yes, he was so excited and I don't think anything could of put that man down. he must of been quite the man to get a job within 30 minutes but i find it funny that he doesn't enter the door pointed out but just stands there for two hours.

  4. 3. What is the hog-squeal of the universe?
A hog squeal is a cry of a hog being killed, but metaphorically speaking to interpret the squeal of the people in this universe is because of all the suffering that has occurred. People live for their own benefit not caring much about others, including any actions or words they may have on a society and everyone could benefit from an understanding of their own actions and words on others. The universe would be more peaceful and kind with not as much suffering if more were involved with kindness.

    4. What is the purpose of the government inspector? Describe him.
“This government inspector did not have the manner of a man who was worked to death; he was apparently not haunted by a fear that the hog might get by him before he had finished his testing. If you were a sociable person, he was quite willing to enter into conversation with you and to explain to you the deadly nature of the ptomaines which are found in tubercular pork; and while he was talking with you, you could hardly be so ungrateful as to notice that a dozen carcasses were passing him untouched.” (Sinclair 30-31) This inspector seemed to be very lazy and did this job because he had to do it. I do not think he cared for the job, but just did was he was told as he stood there with trying to look authoritive.

    5. What is Jurgis’s impression of the meat packing industry? What is yours?
Jurgis was honored to work at a meat packing industry and felt this was a very important place to be. Jurgis saw all the good things about it and was pleased in working here. My view is that a meat packing industry is important because that is what we eat every day and they are a vital part of our society, but there is concern about health matters too.

  5. 5. impressions of meatpacking. He love how they used everything and how they worked with so many men while back home it was just him working on the hog. Is it okay that I no longer want to eat processed foods anymore. Of story i've read, i'm not impressed at all
