Antonia 12

When Jim first returns to Nebraska after being at Harvard, what does he learn about
Ántonia? Why does Jim feel bitterness when Mrs. Harling says “poor Ántonia”?

  1. After graduating from Harvard Jim goes home for a visit and he sees the Harlings and his grandparents. While there, Jim visits with old friends and learns that Ántonia’s fiancé Larry, a train conductor, got her pregnant and then abandoned her. He is told that "poor Ántonia" had a baby after Larry Donovan ran off and is now living at the farm with Ambrosch. Jim is heartbroken that Ántonia is now an object of pity in the town. In contrast, Lena Lingard is now a very respectable, successful dressmaker in Black Hawk. The news deeply upsets and angers Jim because she had to give birth to a child out of wedlock.

  2. I know that he feels the bitterness about the poor Antonia comment because Antonia is better than that to be pity in such a way. He knows that Antonia would never like this but she would never do anything against it, she is a strong woman.

  3. When he as Antonia on his mind he thinks of life and not the pity that other people are seeing. He is looking at the fact that she has brought another life into this world which is something she was meant for, so why would they pity her.
