  1. 4. Explain the political system in Chicago at that time.

It's very corropted with what sounds like mob bosses and their army men. The whole town is their for the highest bid, but if they don't like you they will shut you out. At this time it sounds like Mike Scully is the man in charge right now and has his busniess buddies run other things like the police station and the court systems.

  2. 1. What differences does the union make in Jurgis?
Jurgis is now thinking for the well-being of all his fellow workers and for the well-being of the society he lives in; he is willing to fight for justice and wants his opinion heard. He is thinking consciously because he recognizes the critical situation people in America are suffering. Jurgis is willing to learn to speak and write English for his opinion to be heard for debating in the union.

    2. According to Jurgis how is America the same as Russia?
Jurgis compares Russia with America. Jurgis says that he finds it hard to believe that just like in Russia, in the United States, the people with money are the ones who rule and control the society. They have control because they own the factories and the businesses that provide the jobs for those poor who are in need.

    3. Explain Jurgis’s role in elections. Does he understand what he is taking part in? What exactly is he taking part in?
Jurgis was one of the many ignorant immigrants who were taken advantage from a clever American who just wanted votes. When the elections are undecided, individuals look for easy targets and easy votes (poor people). Jurgis did not have a clue of what was he getting in to, but he did know that he could get a couple of dollars for it, so he did not care.

  3. 5. Who is Mike Scully?
Mike Scully is a wealthy man in Packingtown, he is the leader of the War- Whoop League. He is running for governor in the elections and is a very corrupt leader. He is a corrupt leader because he takes advantage of his governmental position to grant US Citizenship to immigrants. He grants US Citizenships in exchange for their votes to win the elections. He has control over all the things in Packingtown (dumps and fetid water lakes, etc). When he commits corrupt actions, he blames it on others and forces the person out of the country.

    1. I think it is interesting he is Irish--a recent immigrant himself (a couple generations, probably, but still . . .) It doesn't take long for the ones that were abused to become the abusers.
