Jungle #4

What traits distinguish people of one social class from another in United States society today? Money? Job? Home?
Education? Family? Ethnicity? Religion? Can you tell people of different classes apart? What advantages do some classes
have over others? Why do most societies have class distinctions?

  1. To some extent you can see a class structer and were people belong in it. It can be judged by how much money they make and their quality of life they live. You also see a step level with in religion and family. They can improve with education, but even that isn't a garrenty. We all like to be better than another person, so we always have a class struture even when we say we are a society with out class.

  2. Social class is the distinctions between groups and individuals, which are different from one society to another society. Every group of people believes in particular ideas such as age, gender, education, religion, income, family origin that put an individual in a higher or a lower position in a society. Social class in the United States refers more to personal income, educational attainment and occupational prestige. Many people believe that American society has been divided into three groups of poor, middle class and rich. The American society categorized into five major class systems: The first one is upper class, which are the people with a great deal of power who are prestigious and influential. The second-class system is the upper middle class who enjoys a high status job with comfortable income. Lower middle class is the third system that usually suffers from the lack of job security or income. The fourth system labeled as working class includes those individuals who belong to blue as well as white-collar workers; most of them have not received college degrees and suffer from low income.
Culture, education and income are three factors that influence the middle class. If people become more educated, they can earn more money and have things that are more prestigious. Prestigious items are another factor that besides higher education and comfortable income influences an individual to identify himself or herself as an upper middle class or upper class member.
