What is Ántonia’s response to the idea of raising her child by herself? What does her
response reveal about her character?

  1. Antonia does not find fault in raising the child by herself, despite what others would think. She knew the error of her ways but this did not make her love her Martha less, she did not hide her away as a bastard child. She chose to have her portrait taken and put on display for the town to see at the photography studio for example. Antonia had faced so many challenges and overcome them all, this was a challenge she might even enjoy. Her response reveals that she is deeply loyal and loving, that she has her own set of values not to be determined by others.

  2. Antonia approaches the prospect of raising her child by herself with an attitude of strength and determination. Antonia is proud of her baby, and Antonia has risen above social criticism and judgment that she feels she can display her baby's picture with pride. Antonia loved that baby from the very first moment, and was never once ashamed of it. The baby has rejuvenated Antonia’s spirit and her mind, and she is stronger and livelier than ever before. Antonia is an independent spirit and she has matured into womanhood who makes the best of everything handed to her. Antonia’s unhappy love affair has deepened her strength and understanding. She finds comfort in taking loving care of her baby and she is a survivor.

  3. She dosn't mind, she is full of love and life. She embraces the chance to breath new life into this world. She is full of joy to be a mother, she has so much love in her it overflows. She also is hardy, the hard work dosn't slow her down, it only makes her stronger.
