  1. 7. How were the men “forced” to drink, and how does this further their demise?

The men were looking for a warm place to have a hot meal and the local bars would serve hot homemade meals for free if they buy just one drink, but many times the social drinking would begin and cause them to have more than one drink.

  2. 1. Describe the difficulties the family is encountering.
The family is going through tough times because of economic debts and a huge rage of diseases, which the weather did not help at all. The debts were increasing due to Jurgis´ and Ona´s wedding and Antanas´ funeral. Working became harder and harder because of the cold weather, the heater of the house did not work and they suffered the cold almost every day. The coldness that prevails at the house can be used as a metaphor because it can represent failure and death.

    2. What are some of their health issues?
As winter struck, the family became weaker health wise and economic wise. Antanas had feet infection because of the chemicals in the factory he worked in and is coughing a lot. Stanislovas gets sick because of excessive drinking at the wedding. The kids who drank milk were very sick because the milk they had been drinking was contaminated and that caused an infection in their stomach. Winter was the creator of all these diseases and the economic crisis they are all going through.

    3. What happens to Antanas and why?
Antanas was an old man and worked hard despite his age and his physical conditions. He had always been a hard worker and he did not feel the need to stop working. One day at the chemical factory where he worked, he had physical contact with the substance and got very sick. Antanas continued to work to help the family economically, but he later collapsed shortly after the incident and died.

    1. 2. Don't think winter was the creator of ALL these disasters--but the plants had a great deal to do with them as well. Antanas' infection--directly caused by his work. The milk--"Doctored" by the company. The house is cold because it was built shoddily and doesn't keep the wind out.

  3. 6. What did Stanislovas witness and what effect did it have on him?
Stanislovas witnessed a man´s ears freezing and falling apart because of the harsh and extreme cold of the winter. This was a very graphic scene to witness and it is very traumatizing because it is not normal to see these things. This made Stanislovas develop a trauma or fear to cold weather because he saw what these extreme conditions could lead. People in the factories are very cold and they use dead pieces of the animals in order to achieve heat.

    1. It was a BOY wasn't it??? Not a man? And Stasnislovas was a boy as well. Very frightening for a little boy, I would think.

    2. it was a boy and it was horrible to think a child could go through that. this left a mark on Stanislovas and he no longer wanted to go to work and Jurgis had to take him, even carry him if the snow was to high.

  4. 6. What did Stanislovas witness and what effect did it have on him? He is forced to trudge to work each blustery day to stand in a freezing cellar to tend to the Lard machine. He is exposed to another boy who had walked to work and upon arriving was half frozen with his ears becoming stiff and actually breaking off due to the weather conditions. Stanislovas is terrified this or worse will happen to him and he does not want to risk going out into the cold again so he has to be whipped by Jurgis and carried to work during the heinous weather conditions.
