  1. 3. What social class does Jurgis belong to? What criteria determine the class system?

He is part of the lowest class, the working class that was as equal as a slave would have been. It even tells you about the different levels that they didn't like to socialize with one another like that clerk who didn't want to even touch them because he was at a higher class then them and didn't live in the same area but a better part of town instead.

    1. 9. What effect did childbirth have on Ona?

One phrase that really stands out to me is they call the milk sold at the local store "pale blue poison"--and this is what they are feeding to the baby!

    2. I like the way they describe the accountants for the plant--how their life must really suck as well--but they are still tons and tons better than the immigrant labor.

  2. 1. What financial difficulties is the family now facing?
The family is having financial difficulties because they have less income because Marija was fired from her can painting job. They need more money too because Ona is giving birth to his child, Antanas. The family is barely gaining enough money to pay their bills. They realize that buying the house the way they did resulted to a very expensive transaction. Jurgis questions the real estate agent about all the problems the house has and he just answers him with more bills.

    2. Describe the perils brought by the summertime and heat.

Winter produced numerous problems for the people of Packingtown and the hot and summer did too. The sun caused sunstrokes to every hardworking person in the factories, bringing not only the heat, but also flies and diseases. The diseases caused death for some of these factory workers. Workers sweated more than usual and hygiene became a major problem. The workers started to smell and the waste at the factory started to smell.

  3. 4. What are the disadvantages of union membership?
Workers who were part of the union had many disadvantages because they could lose their jobs. The factory owners wanted workers who were devoted and workers who followed the rules. Jurgis was in the union, which demonstrates him as a member of the union. Jurgis was considered a rebel and a threat because he wanted a new society. This idea of a society would not make the factory owners happy.
    7. Why did Ona’s boss and co-workers dislike her?

Ona worked in a place where the majority of her coworkers were prostitutes. This turned out to be a major issue because the prostitutes disliked Ona because she earned the same amount of money they did. Ona was a very proper woman with a good personality and reputation. The prostitutes were jealous that she had a nice life.

  4. 7. Ona was the good girl married and not a "working girl" that was on the same standing.
    9. she is affected by what i would think could possibly be post-pardom but look at where she works and lives. There are some many things that womb trouble could be. also the childbirth is a money burden even though Jurgis would never see it like that for he is in awe of the baby.

  5. 6. It meant that she was pregnant and she will soon give birth. Jurgis would have to bring a doctor who can assist but it would cost 15 dollars or more.

  6. 8. The packinghouse are very dangerous, they face dangerous things and death. And because it’s a more dangerous place they don’t earn more. One couldn’t complain if you wanted to keep their job so they remained silent.
