His wife tries to have the baby but it's to soon. The mother has no doctor to help because they have no money so she and the baby both die. Jurgis losses it and goes drinking all the money the child comes home with and Aniele gets mad at him for doing so and banishes him to the attic which he is renting and faces the family. He understands then that they have to move on and he needs to get up and keep trying for the sake of the family, for his son, to keep living.

    1. this part was so sad for me, just one thing after another for this man and i felt that he really couldn't get worse. Ona was his life even if he kept thinking being married ruined him.

    2. Jurgis has his son Antanas to live for as well as the rest of the family however he is so paralyzed by her death that he forgets his responsibilities and robs the family of their only money to liquor himself up. This is a turning point for Jurgis because he has realized no matter how hard you fight, the corruption and the power of Packingtown will always win. He has lost the most important thing to him because he failed to provide for her adequately, he has lost her and himself at the same time.
